After two U.S. headlining club tours, Toronto rock duo Death from Above 1979 have been Rosetta Stone V3 handpicked to open for Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails when they kick off their North American arena tour October 16th in San Antonio, Texas. DFA 1979 is a heavy-ass, noisy, dance-punk rhythm section, comprised of singer/drummer Sebastien Grainger and bassist/keyboardist Jesse Keeler. Formed in 2001, the pair released an indie EP, Heads Up, finally releasing their full-length U.S. debut, Youre a Woman, Im a Machine, last fall to plenty of buzz. Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme did a remix for the DFA 1979 track "Black History Month" for a U.K. vinyl pressing -- also set to appear on DFA 1979s remix/B-sides/live album due in the fall -- and now the bands will be hitting the road together, even though they have yet to meet in person. Says Grainger, "Wed been passing notes like kids in school, through other bands." The duo doesnt seem concerned about being dwarfed on such large stages and has no plans to alter its live presentation on the seventeen-date tour. "Were going to get the White Stripes in and ask them how they do it," jokes Keeler. And at the end of the five days we had probably like ten pieces of music. And then on the sixth day I asked for the room to myself and just like belted it out over the ten pieces of music. And it all kept getting [pared down]. Thats another reason why it ended up being aggressive. Unusually hard, from what I understand.Well, it wasnt that I set out to work hard on them. Because its not always hard. And it should be easy. If you connect with the idea and the light hits you in the forehead, you get it on the typewriter, you get it on the eight-track machine in front of you -- your little portable machine -- then sometimes it can go quick. The hard part was just sticking at it for, you know, it could be eight days for one song until the fucking beam hits you between the eyes and then youre ready. Planning a Green Day set in 2010 must be a bitch. Half the audience wants Rosetta Stone Broadway-musical-inspiring opuses about love, war and Really Meaningful Things; the other half still idolizes 16-year-old songs about jacking off from an album named after excrement. At Tuesday nights tour kickoff at Camden, New Jerseys Susquehanna Bank Center, the band split the difference with a blistering 2-hour-and-40-minute set that was part post-American Idiot greatest hits and part pop-punk history lesson.As the lights dropped, fans rose to chant the mournful Song of the Century, giving it the same reverence as the national anthem. Flanked by lyric-scrawled, Les Mis-like mini-billboards, the band first took fans through a 10-song set from Idiot and last years 21st Century Breakdown. Their knack for propaganda iconography was in full force as heartstring-tugging images flashed Rosetta Stone V3 across towering LED screens (angels with redacted faces, marching soldiers, always-epic flaming skulls). Legends Rock Three Back-to-Back Shows in New York

"Its just like playing a three-hour show," said the Deads Bob Weir, backstage at New Yorks Cheap Rosetta Stone Angel Orensanz theater, "but its broken up by cab rides." Weir wasnt joking. To unofficially kick off their spring reunion tour, the Dead had grand plans to play a free concert in a large outdoor venue in New York City, possibly Battery Park. When both the weather and city paperwork scotched that idea, the band did the next best thing. On March 30th, the Dead played three free, back-to-back shows in the city like Prince did in L.A. Saturday night; the roughly 4,100 free tickets were distributed to fans by Internet lottery. (Check out photos of all three gigs.)And what a long, intermittently strange day it was, beginning with Weir, bassist Phil Lesh and touring guitarist Warren Haynes playing "Friend of the Devil" on The View. (The band is longtime friends with co-host Whoopi Goldberg.) At 5 p.m. the men did a rare Rosetta Stone V3 acoustic-trio set at the intimate Angel Orensanz, a former synagogue on the Lower East Side. The show focused on American Beauty and Workingmans Dead classics like "Dire Wolf," "Cumberland Blues" and "Casey Jones," but the highlight was a largely instrumental, 20-minute version of "Bird Song," the three men weaving guitar lines in and around each other.At 8 p.m., Lesh, Weir and Haynes were joined by drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti at the Gramercy Theatre, where the full band played an hour of nonstop electric music. Still in electric mode, the Dead awed an enraptured, dancing crowd with nearly two more hours of music, starting with "Althea" (on which Haynes sang Garcias parts, as he often did), followed by "Cassidy," "Eyes of the World" and a typically improvisational "St. Stephen."
